Quantitative Phase

The study adopted a sequential mixed method approach with a qualitative follow-up phase building on the initial quantitative phase (Creswell, 2009, p. 211).  The snowball/referral sampling technique was utilised to identify staff. The snowball sampling technique is used when the researcher initially samples a small group of people relevant to the research question, and these individuals propose other participants who have experience or characteristics relevant to the study (Bryman, 2012).

Data Analysis

Data Analysis Phase of Research

This video gives a detailed overview and reflection of the data analysis phase of this research.

It highlights what information was extracted from Webcourses, what the reports tell us about student engagement and how correlation analysis was conducted.

It also provides the rationale behind key decisions taken during the quantitative study.

The video also highlights some key readings which facilitated the correlation analysis of the study.

 Webcourses Reporting

This is a slide share document that highlights the main findings extracted from D.I.T's leaning management system namely Blackboard Learn 9.1 reporting system

(Or what is more commonly referred to in D.I.T as Webcourses)

More information on these reports are available on the Webcourses Analytics website

Quantitative Phase

Step One

Extract reports for all students (n=84) in each of the modules (n=4) involved in the study.

Step Two

Analysis the above reports for patterns and trends.

Examine what features of Webcourses are being used within each module and when they are being used  e.g mid term assessment and end of module examinations.

Step Three

Identify key variables within Webcourses.

The Learning Management System (LMS) variables that I extracted from Blackboard reporting included

  • Logins

  • Time Spent

  • Hit Activity in Content Area

  • Overall Hit Activity

  • Multiple Choice Quiz (Scores)

Step Four

Conduct relationship/correlation analysis on these variables to see what relation , if any exist between these variables and academic success.

Step Four

Produce report for each of the staff participants which summarises the analysis of their respective modules. The purpose of this is that it will feed into the qualitative phase.

Attached is a sample report produced for one of the staff participants .
