How to do a research interview

Preparation for research interview

I watched this video in preparation for the interviews with staff participants.

I have plenty of experience of being an interviewee but limited experience of being an interviewer.

This video demonstrates two contrasting examples of unstructured interviews which covered the basic Do's and Don't's of conducting an interview and it served me well during the interviews.

The author highlights important criteria of a good interviewer which informed this phase of the research . Among these were to be knowledgeable, clear, provide structure, steer the interview , interpret , build rapport, remember and be ethically sensitive. Another consideration I felt , which wasn't overly emphasised in this video was to be prepare in advance. But this observation is influenced by my own mantra which is   "fail to prepare, prepare to fail".

Interview Questions

Interviews conducted with staff participants provided the qualitative data for this study.

They followed a semi-structured approach with the objective of receiving feedback from participants on their evaluation of (a) Webcourses data analysis features,(b) the workshop and their perceptions of data analysis and learning analytics in education.

Interviews were recorded and transcribed by the researcher.

The attached document outlines some of the questions asked during the interview stage.I tested some of these questions with some colleagues before the interviews and also sent them on to project supervisor for a second opinion. Details of which can be found in the March and April supervisor logs.

 PADLET

Padlet is an application I saw the course lecturers use in the MSc and I thought it would be an interesting way to capture some of the feedback from the interviews which have already been conducted with staff participants. In line with Ethical guidelines all posts from participants in the study have been anonymised
